This is the second volume of ‘Classical Music with Alto’. First of all, I would like to explain that this is a narrated concert using storytelling to introduce audiences to the world of classical music. ‘Alto’ is a female character that I designed to be the narrator for the recital. I would like to present that classical music is not always complicated and difficult to understand when we know the context behind it.

The objective and intention of my research is a continuation of my work in the first volume which I initiated last year. In present-day Thailand, I find that many people do not have opportunities to know about classical music, as most people consider it as a form of high art that they are unfamiliar with. This lack of interest in classical music is apparent not only in Thailand, however, but all over the world. In response to this, I created an online learning tool to make classical music more accessible by increasing opportunities to engage and enthuse those who are interested in classical music but do not know how to interact with it. More importantly,  I hope that the educational content I create for this recital will be used as a tool to improve classical music appreciation in Thailand, especially for young people. Audiences will know more about the composers and the pieces on the program on both a rudimentary and advanced level; I have designed the content to be engaging for classical musicians and non-musicians alike.

What is special about this volume?

In this volume, I will discuss topics such as the unique features of the viola as an instrument, the role of the viola in classical chamber and solo pieces, the story behind each piece and the composers who wrote them, and the practice of music forgery in the Romantic period.

The topic in this second volume for this year’s recital circles around the viola. What is its role in the musical world and what is the advantage of playing it? I personally think that this concert presents viola in a way that a lot of musicians may not have thought of before and it is a good opportunity to introduce the viola to non-musicians. I have worked to make the connection between the pieces clearer and more logical than the last volume. Because I had the experience in doing this last year, I decided to insert more pictures and colored drawings in the final production.

As for the working process, I still divided it into two different parts which are the research aspect and the practical aspect. As I learned from my previous experience, research is the part that I need to consider the most. Having clear information will make the practical process of working easier. I begin by ordering the concert program. Then I start researching and finding interesting information and connections between each piece. For the practical part, I start drafting the storyboard along with the script, because it is easier for me when I do the voice-over.
