The Four Old French Dances

Composed for Viol (Viola da gamba, an Italian expression indicating that the instrument is meant to rest vertically on one’s leg) is an old musical instrument that primarily used during the Renaissance and Baroque period. It’s similar to cello but it has six strings and fretted like guitar

  • L’ Agréable

    • Translate literally as “The Pleasant one”

    • Pleasing to the mind or sense especially as according well with one’s tastes or needs, for example, “An agreeable companion

    • Being in Harmony

    • Pleasure, Pleasant, nice, enjoyable

      • Une odeur agréable émanait de la cuisine
        (A nice smell emanated from the kitchen)

      • Nous avons passé une soirée très agréable avec des amis
        (We had a very enjoyable evening with friends)

      • La musique douce avait un son agréable
        (The soft music have a pleasing sound)

  • La Provençale

    • Provençale is a maritime region in southeastern France.

    • (Cuisine) Prepared food in style of provençale with garlic and oil

  • La Matelotte

    • The matelotte (from the French matelot, ‛sailor’) is an old Dutch sailors' dance in double time which similar to a hornpipe, performed in wooden shoes, the dancers' arms being interlaced behind their backs.

    • (Cuisine) A cooking dish based on fish cut into pieces and cook with red or white wine.

  • Le Basque

    • Basque= Country

    • “Le Basque” is a quick and joyful dance; those who speak French will probably observe that in France the phrase “courir comme un Basque” means “to run like a hare” (literally, “like a Basque”). Probably because of its short length, today the piece is used by many performers as an encore piece.
